2008
February
- The limit on the amount of the compensatory award for unfair dismissal increases from £60,600 to £63,000 on 1 February 2008. The maximum amount of a “week’s pay” for the purpose of calculating basic or additional awards of compensation for unfair dismissal and statutory redundancy pay increases from £310 to £330.
April
- The Equality and Human Rights Commission is due to comply with its gender, race and disability equality statutory duties.
- The Information and Consultation of Employees Regulations 2004, which establish a framework for informing and consulting employees, will extend to employers with 50 or more employees.
- The weekly rates of statutory maternity, paternity and adoption pay are due to increase from £112.75 to £117.18 on 6 April 2008.
- Statutory sick pay is due to increase from £72.55 to £75.40 a week.
The Conduct of Employment Agencies and Employment Businesses (Amendment) Regulations 2007 are due to come into force on 6 April 2008. The regulations seek to increase protection for those seeking work and reduce regulatory burdens faced by employment businesses.
- The Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007 comes into force on 6 April 2008, introducing a new offence of corporate manslaughter.
- Following the former Equal Opportunities Commission's successful application for judicial review of the Employment Equality (Sex Discrimination) Regulations 2005, new regulations will amend the Sex Discrimination Act 1975 (affecting, amongst other issues, the definition of harassment).
