Richard is a partner and deputy head of the Employment Department. He has specialised in employment and equal treatment issues since qualification in 1992.
Richard advises on all aspects of employment law from the boardroom to the basement. He advises on large-scale redundancy programmes, TUPE transfers and rollouts of contractual changes across workforces as well as rapid response advice for employment problems that require immediate action, and litigation in relation to unfair dismissal and discrimination issues. In addition to his work for private sector employers, he has taken particular responsibility for developing the Department’s public sector and equality and diversity practices.
Until 2001, Richard conducted all of the advocacy work for his cases before Employment Tribunals and the Employment Appeal Tribunal. Case volume and the rise in multi-issue, multi-day cases has made this impossible but Richard maintains some advocacy as part of his practice to keep in touch with the Tribunal system through personal hands-on experience.
He speaks regularly at conferences and seminars and provides bespoke training to clients on all employment and equality issues. He has contributed an email and internet policy to The Cabinet Office website and precedents to Butterworths Encyclopaedia of Forms and Precedents Employment Law Volume. He has also written widely for journals as diverse as the New Law Journal and Pipes and Pipelines International. Richard was a founder member of the editorial board of the Public Sector Employment Law Journal and is now on the editorial board of the Employment Law Journal. He has just written a book on promoting equality and diversity in the workplace.
