Assistant Solicitor
Qualified 2001
Contact: Nicholas.Thorpe@ffw.com
Nick Thorpe trained with the firm and has specialised in employment law since qualification in 2001. His practice covers both public and private sector work (with a particular focus on the retail, financial services and property management sectors). He also provides employment advice and support to the firm’s large Japanese client base.
Nick’s public sector work includes both contentious and non-contentious matters. On the non-contentious side, he has advised on the TUPE aspects of several public sector contracts, most recently for the Identity and Passport Service. He also handles a large number of Tribunal matters for the Department for Work and Pensions, including complex discrimination and dismissal claims, and currently has an appeal before the Employment Appeal Tribunal relating to disability discrimination.
He is a member of the Central London Retail Personnel Group (CLRPG) and regularly hosts legal update events for that Group. He is also responsible for the firm’s monthly “Retail People” email alerter, which focus on employment law issues in the retail sector. His knowledge and experience in this sector has lead to being interviewed and quoted by Retail Week on subjects as diverse as holiday entitlement and the increase in store violence.
Other recent achievements include advising a Japanese client in a complicated cross border working time dispute (involving over 100 claimants) which was successfully resolved through mediation; and successfully resolving a collective dispute involving 70 claimants, which attracted industry press attention not least because the potential exposure was several million pounds.
